Last week, 26 of our Y12 A-Level Geography students spent 4 days out on a residential trip to Scarborough and the Holderness Coast.

As part of their Geography A-Level, all students must carry out primary data collection which is then thoroughly presented and analysed within their coursework (non-examined assessment). This is worth 20% of their overall grade.

This year’s cohort had a fantastic week away in the sunshine, with some students collecting Human Geography data in Scarborough and the remaining students collecting their Physical Geography data along the coast at Flamborough Head and Hornsea. Enquiries in Scarborough focused mostly on the need for or impact of various urban regeneration projects in the town, the varying levels of urban deprivation in the north and south bay areas, as well as studies into perception of place and the impact of tourism. Enquiries in Hornsea were mostly linked to the impact and sustainability of coastal management schemes, as well as investigations into the main causes for and the effects of increased erosion rates along this coastline.

Students worked incredibly hard during their independent data collection, confidently completing questionnaires with the public and local businesses, as well as carrying out detailed data collection on the beach. They were rewarded with some free time to enjoy the amusement arcades in Scarborough, some award winning Mr Moo’s ice cream in Skipsea as well as a meal out at Cowshed restaurant on our last night.

A big well done to our lovely Geography students who behaved impeccably for the entirety of our visit, and a massive thank you to Mr Williams, Miss Archer and Mr Clarke for accompanying me on this trip and making it such a success.

Until next year!

Mrs Parker (Lead for KS5 Geography at JTHS)
