Sixth Form Management Games
Our Year 12 Business Students had an incredible day participating in the Sixth Form Management Games, led by ‘The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accounting’, The annual competition tasks pupils with a fictional public office to run and this year’s competition was based on working within a local council.
The students held different roles from Head of Finance to Head of Neighbourhood Services and had to make and justify their decisions on finances and projects run for the local community. The morning consisted of them writing a report to be delivered under strict time constraints, the students however faced multiple interruptions including the head of a trade union, in which they had to negotiate terms and include this within their budget.
The afternoon session required them to create a presentation and deliver this and be questioned by the judges. The entire day is run and judged by industry professionals, the students are also given a mentor. Our students mentor was a former CEO of a council, who was able to advise them and give them career advice about different financial and accounting apprenticeships which they can apply for.
Well done to everyone for showing an incredible amount of professionalism and integrity throughout the day!
London Economics Trip
Year 12 economics students went to London on Thursday visiting key areas and businesses. There first stop was at The Bank of England and learnt all about the current and historical monetary and fiscal policies, they looked at the current price of gold and how money has evolved over time.
Throughout their time in London they were able to see all of the significant buildings within the financial district and learn about different careers linked to Finance and Economics.
In the afternoon the students attended a workshop created by Innocent Smoothies, they learned about not only the branding and creation the company use but also the costings. The students had to use this information to pitch and present their own smoothie, including costings and market research to a panel of judges. The winning team had their smoothie made for all students to enjoy.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park Business Trip
Our business students had an insightful trip to Yorkshire Wildlife Park this week to learn more about the operations and processes of running a successful business.
The visit also revealed the park’s organisational structure and variety of roles within a business. This included; the animal specialists, maintenance teams, hospitality staff, office teams and zero-hours workers in the restaurants, and how they work collaboratively to keep the park operating. Students discussed how roles differ, why clear lines of responsibility matter and what employability skills are important for each job role. This gave the pupils an insight into actual business scenarios and apply theory learnt in the classroom.
It was also fascinating for our pupils to listen to recruitment process and how Yorkshire Wildlife Park connects with international organisations for training and support. They learnt about interview processes, onboarding steps and the benefits of networking with other organisations.
Overall the day was a great success. The insight was invaluable for enhancing our student’s knowledge within a successful business. Well done to everyone for representing the school so brilliantly!
