Year 12 Law students began their tour with a walk through history in the Palace of Westminster, where they explored centuries of British history beginning in Westminster Hall, the oldest part of the palace.

Students stood in the vast hall and were excited to learn about its role hosting royal coronations, state feasts, and lying in state ceremonies. Mrs Nurse, Head of Law, commented how this experience ‘helped students appreciate how historical spaces shape modern government.’

The group then sat in the House of Commons chamber and observed an emergency debate in response to recent air traffic control failures. Seeing parliament firsthand gave the students a clear view of democratic process and how national issues are responded to. After the tour, students took part in an educational workshop where they formed political parties and drafted policies on the environment and education. Once they had put their case together, they later enjoyed presenting their proposals to their peers. This exercise was to build their skills in policy-making, public speaking and further legal understanding.

After lunch and a trip to Leicester Square, the students visited the Supreme Court. They visited all three courtrooms, explored the educational exhibition and learned about the Court’s role in the justice system.

Well done to all students for representing the school so well. We hope this visit offered a memorable, firsthand insight into the UK’s legislative processes and that these new experiences and teachings can be applied when back in the classroom.
