Over the coming weeks, our school will be launching an exciting cross-curricular project built around the theme GROW. A number of subject areas (STEAM) will be delivering a lesson, starter, plenary activity or extra-curricular challenge inspired by this theme. This will be in the final 2 weeks of the half-term however, the reading project is available from Monday 2nd March.

At the heart of this project is a strong focus on reading. Developing confident, independent readers is one of the most important ways we can support students’ success across every subject. Research consistently shows that reading for pleasure improves vocabulary, comprehension, writing ability and overall academic achievement. Just as importantly, it builds empathy, curiosity and resilience.

As part of the project, Mr Weighall, Head of our Learning Resource Centre, will set a dedicated reading task for all Year 7 students. This will be followed by a quiz through the Accelerated Reader programme. We would greatly appreciate your support in helping us,  and to take part fully in the wider GROW activities across their subjects.

During the final two weeks of this half-term, students will receive a reward card.  They can collect stamps by completing the reading task and quiz, and by engaging positively in as many GROW-themed lessons and activities as possible. Completed cards will be recognised and celebrated.

You can support your child by:

  • Encouraging them to set aside regular time for reading at home
  • Reminding them to complete their Accelerated Reader quiz
  • Motivating them to fully engage with their GROW reward card

We are excited about the opportunities this project provides to strengthen both literacy and our wider school community. Thank you, as always, for your continued support in helping your child GROW as a learner. Kind regards, Mr Mitchell, Head of Science.
