On Thursday, the LRC was a hub of activity as we celebrated World Book Day 2026, aimed to inspire our young people to read and share stories.

The day started with a group of forty pupils participating in ‘The Great Big World Book Day Footy-Booky Quiz. Thousands of schools across the UK joined this interactive livestreamed event, that brought together famous authors, comedians and Premiership Football stars. The pupils had to rely on both their knowledge of literature and football over two furious rounds of quizzing.

This was swiftly followed by a livestreamed ‘virtual author visit’ from Nathanael Lessore – Carnegie Medal award winner 2025. During his talk, Nathanael discussed his background and how he became a writer, giving an insight into the inspirations for his work and providing useful tips on how young people can develop their own stories.

The day was rounded off with the launch of our exclusive ‘escape room-style’ challenge, ‘Escape from the Evil Librarian’. Members of our JTHS-Library Book Club were selected to be in the first group to tackle this fiendish activity, requiring players to complete a series of reading comprehension and puzzle tasks. Each task revealed one of six word-keys required to open the six locks inside a digital vault; only then is the location of the Master Key revealed. Over the coming weeks, further pupils will be selected to participate in this challenge as part of our rewards provision.
