The celebrations for the 2026 National Year of Reading continued this week with twenty-five pupils from Years 7, 8 & 9 participating in a creative writing workshop. As part of the events co-ordinated by the National Literacy Trust to promote National Storytelling Week, our pupils joined schools from across the UK in a livestreamed interactive workshop led by author and broadcaster Jeffrey Boakye.
Based on the theme ‘Soundtrack your story’, the workshop aimed to inspire a love of story creation through music and rhythm, offering a unique insight into Jeffrey Boakye’s creative process. Drawing on his childhood experiences and musical inspirations explored in his book ‘Musical Truth’ (an exhilarating journey tracking the emotional impact of twenty-eight songs and the artists who performed them, and their place in British history), Jeffrey Boakye demonstrated a range of writing techniques that pupils could apply to their own creative writing process. Pupils were able to share their ideas, offer feedback via the live chat, and take away some valuable advice for their own stories.

For those not in attendance, a recording of the workshop is now available to view on YouTube. Go to National Storytelling Week 2026 KS3/ S1-S3 with Jeffrey Boakye
