Mrs Abbott, Teacher of Science, was delighted to welcome The Medical Mavericks to school to run workshops for our Year 10 and Year 12 pupils.
The Medical Mavericks brought NHS careers to life with interactive sessions that let our pupils try real clinical skills in a safe, supervised setting. During the workshops, pupils took blood samples, recorded and printed an ECG, practiced keyhole surgery techniques, used an ultrasound machine to look inside the body and photographed the inside of their eye.
These activities are guided by trained professionals who explained how the activities linked to specific careers and what pathways were available. These included; a phlebotomist, a cardiac technician, a surgical assistant, a midwife, a dentist, a sonographer, an ophthalmic photographer and more. Pupils were impressed at the wide range of jobs available within the NHS!
Trying these tasks meant pupils discovered transferable skills such as steady hands, attention to detail, teamwork, communication and the technology available.
Well done to all the pupils that took part today for your maturity, enthusiasm and perseverance during the workshops.
