Mr Ali and Mrs Ball were excited to launch the first Chess Club tournament at JTHS and were even more impressed that nearly 40 pupils entered! Over the last few months, pupils have gone head-to-head in a round-robin format for the initial heats, in the build up to the final which took place on Wednesday 6th May.
The top eight advanced to the knockout stage for quarter finals, semi-finals and then the final. In the medal matches, Ross H (Year 11) faced Florence H (Year 7) in the final, and Quinn H (Year 11) played Jamie R (Year 8) for bronze. Both games were hard-fought and there was a real sense of tension and concentration in the air; in the end, Ross was victorious to take first place and Quinn secured the bronze medal. Florence’s run to the final as a Year 7 pupil was an exceptional achievement as she proudly took silver.
