Hot Chocolate with the Head was held in the Library today, recognising pupils who participated in a Book Award Scheme for graphic novels… the perfect location to hold the celebration! Nominated by Mr Weighall, the group of young artists and book lovers from the JTHS Library Book Club and Miss Clayton’s Art Club collaborated on this exciting project.
The Book Club pupils have been participating in the shadow reading project for this year’s annual Excelsior Award, which highlights the best graphic novels published for young people. The pupils get together in the library each week to read, discuss and review the twenty nominated titles before selecting a winner in each of the four age categories. Many genres and styles are represented, from traditional Japanese manga to Marvel & DC superheroes comics.
Members of the Art Club have created their own pieces of artwork based on the art styles of the nominated books to create the display which is currently on show in the school library. The high standard of work produced by the pupils has earned our school a nomination to win the Excelsior Award ‘Nuff Said’ prize for best school display. The winning school will be announced in July!

Mr Weighall, LRC Manager said ‘it’s been a joy to see so many pupils participating in our enrichment opportunities. This year marks The National Year of Reading which unites schools and communities for their love of reading and is the biggest initiative this generation has seen. Here at JTHS we’ve held storytelling workshops, mastermind competitions, young writer awards, world book day and had the pleasure of live streaming sessions with renowned authors, illustrators and publicists. I am incredibly proud of the pupils who participate in these events, they have shown creativity, enthusiasm and most of all a great passion for literature, storytelling and art’.
