Mr Blanchenot’s office was full of young scientists in Year 10, who were nominated by Mr Mitchell for completing their Higher Project Qualification (HPQ). As an extra treat, pupils not only enjoyed the usual hot chocolate & chocolate bar but some delicious doughnuts too!

The HPQ is an exciting opportunity for students to explore a topic they are genuinely passionate about while developing the skills needed for future academic and career success. Equivalent to a Level 2 qualification, the HPQ encourages students to become independent learners by planning, researching and creating their own project on a subject of their choice.

Throughout the project, students built valuable transferable skills including critical thinking, time management, research techniques, problem solving, communication, and presentation skills. They developed their independent working skills by managing deadlines, evaluating sources of information and confidently presenting their findings.

Here’s what they chose to focus on:

  • Emilia B – Blueprint of a Butcher
  • Laura G – What is the most important factor influencing serious criminal behaviour (GBH to murder) in young people (aged10 to 16)?
  • Dennis B – To what extent do stem cells challenge our ethical boundaries in modern medicine?
  • Alex B – Can Scientists Accurately Predict Natural Disasters?
  • Ella P – Can vegans be truly healthy?
  • Louie C – Would society benefit from AI leaders?
  • Lily N – Does The Modern Prison System Change People’s Outlook on Life?
  • Jeffrey C – Should the government make triple science mandatory?
  • Kalum U – Does The Modern Prison System Change People’s Outlook on Life?

Mr Mitchell said ‘I am incredibly proud of the hard-work and commitment these pupils have shown towards the project. They have enhanced key skills that are highly valued by sixth forms, colleges, universities, and employers. Well done to you all.’
