Welcome TO JOHN TAYLOR HIGH SCHOOL Dear Parents, 3 It is our aim to ensure that all pupils transferring to the school feel confident about the many changes and new routines that they will experience. This booklet explains many of these routines and also gives information which we feel will be useful to parents. If you have any questions or matters which cause concern, senior staff will be only too willing to discuss them with you. I look forward to having the opportunity of speaking with you at our Reception Evening on Thursday 25th June. This will provide you with the opportunity to meet Head of Year 7 and Miss Crutchley the Head of Lower School along with senior members of staff. Prior to this we will be holding one Induction Day for your child on either the 29th, 30th June or 1st July. (additional details for the induction day can be found later in this booklet). 5 Induction Days We look forward to welcoming all new intake pupils for a day during the Summer Term. This will be a fantastic opportunity for your child to get to know the school, the staff, and meet other pupils in their Year group. It will also give us an opportunity to get to know them. It is important that all pupils attend their Induction day. TRANSPORT Unfortunately, it is not possible to provide transport on the Induction Days. It is suggested that parents could ‘pool’ transportation to minimise the number of cars needed. Please be aware that you will need to park in the village as we have very limited parking facilities. We will request permission to allow students off site unaccompanied via a form and only those with permission will be allowed to leave unaccompanied. EQUIPMENT Please ensure that your child wears their current school uniform and brings a pen and pencil. WHERE TO GO Pupils should arrive at school for a 8.55am start. They should go to the tennis court area where there will be staff and student leaders to welcome pupils. If arriving on foot, please only use the pedestrian entrance on either Palmer Close or the library car park. Do not walk through the vehicle gates at the front of school. LUNCH ARRANGEMENTS All students will receive a meal, free of charge, from our canteen. We would advise that students bring a snack for break time and a refillable water bottle. END OF THE DAY Year 6 pupils will leave at 3:15pm. We will dismiss the pupils via the tennis courts, where they can either be collected from the school by parents on foot or make their own way home. If you are collecting your child please make sure you collect on time. Please ensure your child is aware of the arrangements you have made. Again, please be aware that you will need to park in the village as we have limited parking facilities, and you will also need to complete the permissions form if your child will be leaving the school site unaccompanied.

Reception Evening for Parents/Carers THURSDAY 25TH JUNE The Reception Evening will be an opportunity to meet Miss Crutchley the Head of Lower School, Head of Year 7, along with Senior members of Staff. We will provide you with key information which will include the school’s Vision, Mission, Values and Motto. Please contact us with any enquiries about the Induction Days or Reception Evening either by email transition@jths.co.uk or by phone 01283 247800. 6 Medical Information Any important medical information about your child should be emailed to l.hollender@jths.co.uk. Once received, a medical care plan will be sent to you to complete and return to us. It is important that we have this information prior to students coming to us for their induction day Special Education Needs Mr A Smith is our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator. If you have any specific concerns which you wish to advise us of then please contact Mr Smith or e-mail a.dolan@jths.co.uk. At John Taylor High School we have a horizontal pastoral system. Every pupil will join a horizontal tutor group. Each tutor group consists of approximately 30 students from Year 7. All students meet with their Form Tutor each morning for 30 minutes. The Form Tutor will register attendance and will monitor your child’s progress throughout their time at John Taylor High School. Your child’s Form Tutor is your first point of contact with the school and should be contacted regarding general pastoral matters. To support our community ethos, learners are also a member of one of the schools four houses: Kingstone, Marchington, Needwood or Sherwood. Each house has its own colour, which depicts the school tie your child will need: The Pastoral System Throughout the year the progress of all pupils is monitored by their Form Tutor, Head of Year, Head of Lower School and the Senior Leadership Team. At present we produce two formal reports a year for parents. For each subject the report will contain information regarding your child’s progress and their attitude towards learning. There will be an opportunity to meet with subject teachers later in the academic year. However, should you need to make contact sooner than the scheduled Parents Evening, please either call the Form Tutor or Head of Year on: 01283 247800, or by e-mail: office@jths.co.uk 7 MARCHINGTON NEEDWOOD KINGSTONE SHERWOOD

The Year 7 Curriculum During Year 7 all pupils study the following subjects: • English • Mathematics • Science • French • History • Geography • Religious Studies • Technology (CDT and Food) • IT • Art • Music • Drama • Physical Education Pupils will also have a Personal Development lesson per week. These lessons include health education, relationships and sex education, economic wellbeing and careers education. Parents can really make a difference by supporting pupils’ learning at home. The curriculum can be found on our website, by going to https://jths.co.uk/curriculum and clicking on Subjects and then downloading the Curriculum maps for each subject.. Employability Skills Employability Skills are essential as they equip our pupils with the abilities needed to succeed in their future pathway and navigate the complexity of the workplace. As a school we have identified six employability skills that will be embedded across the curriculum. These skills were identified by the Stoke and Staffordshire Careers Hub. Employability Skills will be delivered through a registration session once a week for all year groups, throughout the curriculum and through extracurricular activities. The six that we focus on are: • Time Management • Communication • Positivity • Self-Awareness • Teamwork • Problem Solving Employability skills are essential to life long learning and thriving in future career pathways. 8

Start of the School Year The First Day of Term Thursday 3rd September Our new Year 7 pupils need to go to the School Hall via the tennis courts. They will meet with the staff and student leaders who saw them on the Induction Day. The Year 7 pupils will have an assembly before being collected by their Form Tutor and taken to their tutor room. The pupils will spend until break with their tutor group where the Form Tutor will provide your child with their timetable and a school planner to record homework. This is an important time as the Year 7s will be able to establish relationships with members of their form, Form Tutor and ask any questions they may have. Please note that students will not need to bring their PE kit on their first day. Over the next two weeks the student leaders will be on hand to help the Year 7 pupils by showing them around the school, taking them to lessons and being available for support and to answer questions. Equipment They must take care each evening to pack the correct items for the following day’s timetable, as we do not have pupil lockers. Please can parents support their child in doing this for a few weeks at the start of term. There are a lot of new systems to learn at the start of Year 7 so this will help your child with their organisation. It is suggested that your child has the following: • A school bag of a moderate size • Pens, pencils, eraser, coloured pencils etc. • Pencil case • School Dictionary and Thesaurus • French Language Dictionary (recommended Oxford School French Dictionary) • Casio ClassWiz fx-85GT calculator and Geometry Set Parents are asked to ensure that all items of clothing and equipment are marked with their child’s name. We shall then ensure that any mislaid property is returned if found. The school will not be responsible for mobile phones or any other expensive, technical equipment. Homework No homework is set during the first two weeks for new pupils. Thereafter, they will be set two or three pieces of homework each evening, each lasting approximately 20 minutes. This amount will increase as the pupil progresses through the school. Generally pupils can expect to be set at least one homework per subject per week. Homework can be accessed by both parents/ carers and students via Go4Schools. Parents/ carers may also wish to provide a small diary or planner to help support their child in managing homework tasks. 9

10 Recognition At John Taylor High School, we recognise the effort and achievement of our learners in a number of ways, for their accolades both in and out of the classroom. These include: • Praise postcards • WOW Emails • Celebration breakfasts • House merits • Hot Chocolate with the Head Efforts for our learners that demonstrate going above and beyond lead to #HotChocFriday nominations with our Headteacher. Detentions Students may be issued with a detention by a staff member who will record the reasons for this on ClassCharts. For after school detentions, parents will be given at least 24 hours’ notice. There is no requirement to ask for permission; the notification will be to inform a parent/carer that an after-school detention has been issued. Parents are responsible for making the arrangements required for students to get home following the detention. As a school, we implement a range of detentions alongside various other sanctions and behavioural interventions. The type of detention issued depends on the severity of the incident. Detentions are categorised as follows: Lunch-Time Detention (centralised) 25 Minutes Afterschool Detention (centralised) 50 Minutes Senior Leadership Detention (centralised) 1 hour Uniform Infringements Uniform infringements will be sanctioned accordingly. The sanction process is weighted depending on the infringement: Uniform Infringement Intentional Uniform Infringement • Untucked Shirt. • Skirts rolled, shortened or tightened. • Low slung trousers, not being worn correctly on the waist. • Blazer not being worn at appropriate times. • Jewellery beyond one plain stud in each ear and a wristwatch. Trainers without prior discussion with the school. Hoodies/non-school jumper. • False eyelashes or eyelash extensions are not permitted. • False nails are not permitted. 5 instances across a half term will result in an automated lunchtime detention for the following day. Instant lunch detention with potential escalation if the issue is not rectified. Any items worn to school that are not permitted will be confiscated and returned to the student at the end of the school day. Such items can be collected by the student from their school office. Any subsequent confiscations may lead to parental/carer collection from the main school reception. Mobile Phones & Smart Watches • Mobile phones use is not permitted in school. • Use of smart watches is for time telling purposes only. No other smart watch function should be used whilst on school site. • Please note that the school are not responsible for damage or loss of any mobile phones or smart watches that are brought into school. Actions taken should a mobile phone be used/smart watch be used other than for time telling on school site: • On the first occasion of inappropriate use on school site, the mobile phone/smart watch will be confiscated and can be collected by the student from their school office at the end of the day. • On the second and subsequent occasion, the mobile phone/smart watch will be confiscated and must be collected at the end of the school day by a parent/carer.

Should your child be unable to attend school because of illness, please inform the school using the dedicated absence line: 01283 376751. This will enable parents to leave a message with their child’s name, form and reason for absence. For periods of extended absence medical evidence will need to be provided. Any other leave of absence should be requested using our online Leave of Absence request form, which can be found on our website. Unauthorised absence could result in a fixed penalty notice or Statutory Action being issued from the Local Authority. Attendance is monitored weekly. The average attendance at JTHS is over 96%. If a pupil’s attendance declines then the Attendance Intervention Manager may work with your child and the family. Appointments Please try to avoid making medical/dental appointments etc. during school time. However, should this be necessary please telephone the absence line with details and provide the appointment card/letter. This needs to be shown to the staff when the pupil signs out/in or emailed to attendance@jths.co.uk. Without this, we may not be able to authorise the absence. Leave of Absence Requests for leave, in exceptional circumstances, should be made at least 2 weeks in advance of the event and in writing using the Leave of Absence Request Form available on the web page. We kindly request that parents/ carers arrange for any holidays to take place within the normal school holiday periods. 11 Absence

Please do not walk through the main vehicle gates at the front of school. By Car If you drop off or collect your child by car, please park outside the school premises and well away from the main entrance where considerable congestion occurs as buses arrive. School Buses Pupils aged under 16 who live more than three miles from the school within the catchment area are entitled to free transport to and from school. They will receive bus permits from the Local Education Authority at the end of the summer term and must keep them for inspection. Pupils over 16 pay for their own transport unless authorisation from Staffordshire has been given. Parents who live outside this area may apply to the Education Authority for tickets, but this normally involves a termly payment. If you live in Derbyshire and have not had a letter from the Council confirming eligibility for a bus pass then you will need to apply on-line at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/get2school For all transport matters please contact: Staffordshire CC (Pupil Support, School Transport Section) 01785 276738 (for Staffordshire pupils) Derbyshire Transport Officer 01629 536720 (for Derbyshire pupils) The School Day The timing of each day is as follows: 8:55am Latest Arrival Time 9:00am Assembly or Registration 9:30am Lesson 1 10:20am Lesson 2 11:10am Morning Break 11:30am Lesson 3 12:20pm Lesson 4 13:10pm Lunch 14:00pm Lesson 5 14:50pm Lesson 6 15:40pm End of School Transport Arrangements The school and grounds are not formally supervised until 8.45am, although senior staff are generally on site from 8am. Assemblies cover a variety of spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues, and are also used to celebrate achievement. Parents who do not wish their children to attend religious assemblies, or who wish their children to be withdrawn from Religious Studies classes, should write to the Headteacher. 15 Note: Monday 9:00am-9:50 is a timetabled personal development lesson for all students.

Lunch Arrangements We have Healthy Schools Status so we promote Healthy Eating. A breakfast service is run from 8.00am and at lunch there are a range of options including a choice of healthy cooked meals, healthy snacks (such as salads and jacket potatoes) and some fast snacks. A two-course meal is available each day at an approximate cost of £3.25. The canteen operates through a cashless system where accounts are accessed using a thumb scan of each pupil. Dinner money accounts should be credited online through MCAS (more instructions will be sent out prior to September). Parents can also apply for a Paypoint card, which may incur a small fee. To order a card, or if you have any queries on any aspect of making payments to the school, please email paymentsupport@jths.co.uk. This account may also be used to pay for school trips, music lessons, revision guides and other activities. There is a maximum canteen spend limit of £5 a day placed on the account, which can be increased or decreased if requested. If you prefer not to use the thumb print then we can provide a 4 digit PIN code, however that does not have the same level of security. Pupils who wish to bring a packed lunch must eat it in the designated areas where they will be supervised by one of the team of lunch time assistants. During the lunch break there are various sporting and musical practices alongside the Art Room and Learning Resource Centre being open. Pupils are not allowed out of school at lunchtime. If parents wish their child to go home for lunch AND a parent is at home, parents should write to the Head of Year giving the reasons why. Following this a pass may be issued. 16

Who can get free school meals? From the start of the 2026 to 2027 academic year, the Department for Education (DfE) is delivering an expansion to FSM eligibility to include all pupils from households in receipt of Universal Credit. There will then be 2 categories of FSM: • Targeted FSM, which continues to be based on the existing £7,400 income threshold • Expanded FSM, which will apply to meals only, covering pupils who do not qualify for Targeted FSM, but who are in households in receipt of Universal Credit. Free school meals are available to pupils in receipt of, or whose parents are in receipt of, one or more of the following benefits: • Universal Credit • support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 A pupil is only eligible to receive a free school meal where both: • a claim for this support has been made • their eligibility has been verified by the school where they are enrolled or by the local authority Households may also be entitled to a meal if they: • are in receipt of income-related Employment and Support Allowance • receive the guarantee element of Pension Credit • meet criteria set out in separate guidance for families with no recourse to public funds Free school meals: guidance for local authorities, local -authority-maintained schools, academies and free schools - GOV.UK Under the expanded scheme from September 2026, Staffordshire Local Authority are advising that you do not apply until after 15th June 2026. Applying for free school meals | Free school meals | Staffordshire County Council Please note Staffordshire County Council are unable to backdate a claim for entitlement to free school meals to cover unpaid money or refund money paid prior to the start date of a successful application. Children being fostered are not normally eligible to claim free school meals as the fostering allowance paid is intended to cover the cost of the provision of meals for the child. 17 If you currently receive free school meals from Derbyshire, you will need to re-apply to Staffordshire: www.staffordshire.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals We strongly recommend that you apply for Free School Meals if you think you meet the criteria, as this gives you access to a range of other benefits in school. Even if you do not want your child to have the free meal, claiming helps the school as we receive more funding. Please consider this when making your decision. If you would like to discuss this with a member of staff please contact Miss N Dean, Assistant Head on n.dean@jths.co.uk.

19 As part of our continued development at John Taylor High School, we have introduced EVOLVE Clubs which is a system to manage all extracurricular activities. The school offers a wealth of opportunities to our pupils beyond their timetabled lessons. All pupils are welcome, and our clubs aim to complement classroom learning and support our pupils’ current interests. Pupils will also be able to meet new friends and enhance their social skills, improve their confidence and communication skills, achieve academic potential and personal excellence, and perhaps explore new opportunities that could be beneficial for future pathways. All parents will receive an email from Evolve, once your child is on roll with us, per term. The system is personal to each pupil and will only show clubs relevant to your child. You will be able book clubs, amend bookings, monitor attendance, and receive club specific information. * example timetable only Extracurricular Activities Learning Resource Centre The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) provides a welcoming and supportive environment for all pupils and is open from 8.15am until 4.15pm. Our aim is to encourage pupils to continue reading for pleasure and to become independent learners, with the provision of a wide range of up-to-date fiction and non-fiction books, audio books, e-books and online resources. There is also a book group to join at lunchtimes and pupils can apply to join our team of librarian volunteers towards the end of Year 7. We also run a stationery shop where pupils can buy supplies at a very reasonable cost. 20 At John Taylor High School we use e-mail and various online platforms and apps to communicate with parents/carers. You will be advised of how to log on to these systems in due course but it will be essential that the e-mail address that you provide us with is correct. Once your child has started at the school we encourage all parents/carers to download both the MyChildAtSchool (MCAS), Class Charts and Go4Schools Apps. Online Parental Information Go4Schools App & Website Go4Schools is our online system that staff, parents and pupils can access at school or at home. There is also an App available that should make use of the system far easier. In Go4Schools: Students can: • Access their timetable • Track their assessment data • Check what homework has been set and when it is due Parents can access: • Student progress reports • Check what homework has been set and when it is due • Student timetables MyChildAtSchool (MCAS) MCAS is the platform we use for our data collection. MCAS can be accessed through a web browser or via an app and it allows parents to update their own details as well those of their child. Parents are also able to view and update parental consent and view their child’s timetable. MCAS also allows school to publish documents we feel are useful to parents. From September, the school will move all online payments to MCAS, including payments for school meals and educational visits. You will receive further information on how to get set up before your child starts in September. www.jths.co.uk The school website is widely used to keep parents up to date with school news, sporting fixtures and other important information. In the case of severe weather the site is updated to give details of school closures and advise of any problems with bus services. The website also gives parents access to all the school policies, OFSTED reports; term dates, exam dates, etc. You will also find links to access the above Apps at https://www.jths.co.uk/parents/parents-useful-links/. Class Charts Class Charts is our new attendance, achievement and behaviour portal. You will be able to see your child’s attendance records here as well as details of the achievements they have been awarded such as merits. Staff will also record behaviour incidents and allocate detentions in this system. It includes an automatic notification system to further support students and parents.
